ESRC-DFID Raising Learning Outcomes in Education Systems Research Programme - 2016 call

ESRC and DFID are pleased to announce the third funding call under the Raising Learning Outcomes in Education Systems Research Programme.

Deadline for proposals: 16.00 UK time on 26 July 2016

This £20 million programme is generating world-class cutting-edge social science research that addresses key questions on learning outcomes within education systems in developing countries. The aim is to provide policymakers and practitioners with concrete ideas on how to improve learning, and understanding of how these will translate to their specific contexts and institutions. Funding is being awarded through three annual calls, each with a different but complementary thematic focus.

The 2016 call is focused on the theme of ‘Accountability’ and the core question -how do accountability relationships and processes within developing country education systems enable or inhibit the raising of learning outcomes?

A total of up to £6.5 million is being made available for proposals to this call. Proposals are invited for projects with a full economic cost (fEC) value of between £200,000 and £700,000. Proposals outside this value range will not be accepted. This budget limit refers to the total cost of the project, not the contribution paid by the ESRC and DFID. Projects may be from one year up to a maximum of four years in duration.

Proposals are sought from across the social sciences and may be for fundamental or more applied research topics, as long as the policy relevance is clearly articulated. There are no geographic restrictions on who may apply for this funding opportunity: researchers from developing and developed countries can work together in any configuration of their choosing, and principal investigators can be from anywhere in the world. Proposals which are not deemed to be within the scope of the call will be rejected.

Call for Applications for Multi Million Research Programme led by Disabled People

Call for applications for multi million research programme led by disabled people.

Disabled people, their organisations, academics and partners are being invited to apply for grants for research and pilot projects to find out how disabled people, and those with long term conditions, can participate fully in society, achieving independent living.

Organisations can apply for up to £150,000 from the DRILL (Disability Research on Independent Living and Learning) programme, which launched last autumn and expects to fund around 40 projects in the UK over the next four years.  DRILL opened this Monday 9 May for applications and will close on 27 July.  Please visit the DRILL funding page for further information.

Disabled people will be at the forefront of designing projects (with academics and policy and practice experts), for the programme. DRILL is funded by a £5 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund and will be delivered by Disability Rights UK, Disability Action Northern Ireland, Inclusion Scotland and Disability Wales.

The Programme Board said:

“Our aim is to build new evidence on what would enable disabled people to take full part in society – with disabled people in the lead, setting the priorities and co-designing the projects. We’re looking forward to receiving some exciting proposals”.

Proposals will be assessed by a National Advisory Group, with a Central Research Committee made up of disabled people, academics and policy experts making a final decision on which projects receive funding.

Fast Track Applications will find out if they have been successful in September 2016.  Larger applications using a 2 Stage Application process will find out in March 2017.

This is the first call for applications.  A further 3 calls is anticipated over the next 4 years.

There are three categories of grant-

• All projects will definitely need to involve disabled people with lived experience of the topic to be researched.
• All research projects will also all need to involve someone who has good experience of research.
• Pilot projects will need people with good experience of putting proposals into practice and evaluating what happens.
• Applicants might decide to involve other people too – perhaps those responsible for the policy or practice that needs to change.
• Anyone can apply or be involved in a project partnership. This includes organizations in the voluntary sector, the public sector and the private or independent sector.

ECREEE Call for Proposals: Research Grant Program

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) has issued a call for proposals for its Research Grant Program for policy research in any of the energy fields (e.g. energy technologies, energy finance, energy economics, energy policy, energy and the environment/climate change, energy and development, energy law etc.)

The Research Grant Program is part of the ECOWAS initiative on Youth Leadership Development in Energy, which works to prepare the region’s young men and women to become globally competitive energy leaders in the future.

The Research Grant Program aims to build and strengthen the capacity of young West Africans to contribute and participate actively in the energy discourse at the national and regional levels and, thus, ensure that the youth has a say in the way energy development is shaped in West Africa.

• Research teams with a Master or PhD degree holder, or equivalent, will be given priority.
• Membership to the Network of Young Energy Researchers is required for team members after selection of their proposal.
• The young researchers must be supervised by a Project Advisor5 in partnership with an institution likely to use the research results.

The ISSC is an international organisation that aims to advance the practice and use of the social and behavioral sciences in all parts of the world, and to ensure their global representation.

The seminar is designed to improve the quality, reliability, management and accessibility of data of importance to all fields of science and technology.

Swinburne University Chancellor’s Research Scholarships 2014

The Swinburne University of Technology is inviting Research Scholarships from students undertaking a PhD or a Professional Doctorate with exceptional research potential to undertake a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) for the Chancellor’s Research Scholarship (CRS). The major purpose of the Chancellor’s Research Scholarship is to support PhD or Professional Doctorate Students conduct their research program with absolute concentration. Only candidates with exceptional research potential are awarded these research scholarships.

The Chancellor’s Research Scholarships Awards cover tuition fees and provide an annual stipend of $30,000, an Establishment Grant of up to $3,000 and up to $5000 for a 6 month overseas placement in a collaborating laboratory or organization nominated by Swinburne. This overseas placement is a condition of the award.

This is the first round research scholarship announcement for the year 2014, second round will be announced later. Program overview

On an annual basis, up to five individuals are selected for participation in this intensive four-week Fellowship program based at OCLC's headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, USA. The program gives Fellows opportunities to meet with leading information practitioners, visit libraries, and explore topics including information technologies, library operations and management, and global cooperative librarianship.
The Fellows visit many libraries, cultural heritage institutions and library organizations. The Scheme provides Opportunities to Young Scientists (below 35 years) for pursuing exciting and innovative research in frontier areas. The Start-up research grant is a structured scheme to reap the benefit of research potentials of young minds for speeding up the processes and enhance the relative position of the Indian R&D system in global competitiveness. The assistance in the form of a Research Award is given to exceptionally bright young scientists below the age of 35 years.
The Award carries a maximum research grant of Rs. 17.00 lakhs in a block of three years and can be utilised for expenditure on JRF Salary, equipment, consumables, travel and other contingencies in connection with his/her research activities.
Scientists/Engineers working in universities, academic/ research institutions of higher learning and having a regular position are ONLY eligible to apply for this Award.
Those working in the laboratories and institutions fully supported by government departments like DAE, DST, CSIR, ICMR and ICAR need not apply for this award. Scientists and engineers working in R&D organisations of Private Industry or fully supported by Private Industry also need not apply. Also, those who have already received earlier or are currently in receipt of any research grant from any funding agency are not eligible for the Award.

IARC Fellowships for Cancer Research POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR TRAINING IN CANCER RESEARCH 2014-2015

Applications for training fellowships in 2014-2015 are invited from junior scientists wishing to complete their training in those aspects of cancer research related to the Agency’s mission: to coordinate and conduct both epidemiological and laboratory research into the causes and prevention of cancer. Disciplines covered are: epidemiology (including genetic and molecular), biostatistics, bioinformatics, and areas related to mechanisms of carcinogenesis including molecular and cell biology, molecular genetics, epigenetics, and molecular pathology. There is an emphasis on interdisciplinary projects.

Eligibility & Criteria:

• Applicants are eligible from any country. The IARC is particularly keen to promote the development of expertise in cancer research in low- and medium-resource countries by training postdoctoral researchers from these countries who can return to apply their new skills and expertise. Therefore, applications from candidates from low- and medium-resource countries or applicants from any part of the world but with projects related to low- and medium-resource countries are encouraged.
• Candidates are required to have finished their doctoral degree (Ph.D.) within five years of the closing date for application, or be in the final phase of completing their doctoral degree. The working languages at IARC are English and French. Candidates must be proficient in English at a level sufficient for scientific communication. Candidates currently working as IARC-funded postdoctoral scientists, or candidates who have worked at the Agency for a period greater than six months, cannot be considered. Candidates are encouraged to contact the host Group of their choice at IARC before application in order to interact closely to establish a proposed programme of mutual interest.
