Rainforest Trust’s Ark Initiative: Funding for Small NGOs

Last date : February 1, 2016

The RainForest Trust’s Ark Initiative supports projects in developing countries located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, where the need for financial resources is high and where management and protection of areas is most at risk.

It seeks to form strategic partnerships with organizations that share our goal of creating protected areas for IUCN critically endangered and endangered species.

In order to qualify for the initiative, organizations should be:

  • Nonprofit entities or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that represent local stakeholders
  • Well-established organizations with an independent and autonomous oversight and management committee (e.g. Board)
  • Located in tropical Latin America, Africa or Asia

Rainforest Trust supports both land purchases as well as protected area designation projects.
To join the Ark Initiative, organizations must submit a project proposal for either a land purchase or protected area designation that saves habitat for endangered species.

Successful project proposals will include:

  • Populations of IUCN critically endangered or endangered species
  • A cost-effective budget with a reasonable cost per land area value (e.g., $1-$100 per acre for designation or land purchase)
  • Matching support already secured or pledged
  • Support from project stakeholders including local environmental agencies, government officials and communities
