I founded AskPetersen.com with a single goal in mind: to help students solve academic writing troubles and start writing better essays. It’s time to check if I made any progress with that, so I invite all readers of my website to take part in a challenging writing contest. It will be fun!

You’ll get a chance to get your essay published and earn a valuable prize that will motivate you to become an even better writer. Freedom of speech is the main motto of this contest, so you can express any opinions related to the topic you choose!

Okay, it’s time to get into details. Pay attention to these guidelines and you’ll be on your way to entering the contest!

• Topics

I picked some interesting topics that will awaken your critical thinking mode. Each participant can choose only one of these topics and provide only one submission. Please, don’t alternate the title you choose!

• Wordcount

The essays should be from 500 to 1000 words long.

• Language

Please, write your essay in English. The contest is open to participants from all countries, but the papers should be written in English. Good grammar does matter!

• Plagiarism-Free Policy

Your paper must be free of plagiarism. All entries will be checked for uniqueness with a robust plagiarism detection engine. If any signs of plagiarism are revealed, your submission will be disqualified from the contest and all that effort will go to vain.

Make sure to include a list of references for all sources you used to support your arguments!

• Essay Submission Dates

An essay wouldn’t be an essay without a deadline, right? Don’t worry; you have loads of time to work on your entry. I will accept submissions from February 10, 2016 till June 1, 2016.

The results will be announced at AskPetersen.com on June 7, 2016, and the winners will be notified via email.

• Who Can Participate?

Everyone! If you think you can write a great essay on any of the topics provided for this contest, feel free to submit an entry! This contest is international and it’s not limited by age.

• How to Enter The Contest?

Write your essay and send it as an attached document via contact form below. The subject line of your message should be “AskPetersen Scholarship: YOUR TOPIC” (you name your chosen topic). Please, write your name in the body of this message.

• Judging

Now you must be wondering: “who will judge this contest?”. Julie Petersen, yours truly, will evaluate the essays, choose the winners, and publish the papers on the AskPetersen blog. I have a solid base of experience in writing and reading essays, as well as in teaching writing classes and working as a private tutor.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development: 2015 Continuum of Care Program to end Homelessness!

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced initial announcement for Continuum of Care Program Competition to promote a community-wide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness. This program will provide funding for efforts by nonprofit providers, states, and local governments to quickly re-house homeless individuals, families, persons fleeing domestic violence, andyouth while minimizing the trauma and dislocation caused by homelessness.

HUD’s mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. HUD is working to strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes; utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination, and transform the way HUD does business.

Funding Information

Approximately $1.89 billion of fund is available for Continuum of Care Program.

Eligibility Criteria

• Eligible project applicants for the CoC Program Competition are nonprofit organizations, States, local governments, and instrumentalities of State and local governments, and public housing agencies
• The total request for each renewing project may not exceed the ARA approved by HUD for that project.
• HUD encourages the consolidation of appropriate renewal grants when the grants are with the same recipient, have the same component and expire in the same year.

Women Weave the Web Campaign: Support to Grassroots Women Leaders Create Positive Change in the Community

Grassroots Women Leaders generating positive changes in their community are invited to submit three written journal entries to World Pulse’s 2014 Women Weave the Web Campaign. The competition, open to women around the globe, will award $20,000 Lynn Syms Prize along with other incredible prizes.

Lynn Syms, sculptor and philanthropist, is a woman passionate about elevating the voices of unheard women in the world. She hopes to inspire more people to contribute resources to strengthen grassroots women’s leadership globally with her prize.

• Candidates must be successfully using digital tools to advance her work and she must participate in World Pulse’s Women Weave the Web Campaign.
• Candidates must have an established organization, program or project, though in the early stage of development.
• Candidates must have following demonstrated characterstics- courage, commitment and integrity; and must possess demonstrated ability to serve as an inspiration to community leaders elsewhere.
• Candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively in English for her/his cause and elevate community concerns.
• Candidate must be working on initiatives that address a pervasive problem faced by women around the world.
• Primary focus of the candidate must be promotion of global issues through the eyes of women.
• Candidate must demonstrate exceptional track record of early accomplishment in community based work.
• Priority is given to candidates based and working primarily in a developing country.

Opportunity for Youths: Free Training + attend the Entrepreneurship Summit in Berlin

UNESCO in partnership with Goi Peace Foundation and Stiftung Entrepreneurship (Berlin) has launched the Youth Citizen Entrepreneurship Competition – an exciting new opportunity to develop your innovative ideas and projects to create positive change in your community and the world. The competition provides a global platform for young entrepreneurs who aspire to create positive change in their communities.

By highlighting the best examples of youth entrepreneurship, the competition aims to empower the young generation to take the initiative in social innovation and become pioneers in building a harmonious and sustainable society. With their innovative ideas and leadership, these global citizens will tackle some of the key challenges of today and offer a model of the entrepreneurial potential that will fuel our future.

All participants will receive free training at the online Entrepreneurship Campus. This training provides methods and techniques for developing ideas into solid business models, to turn a budding idea into a fully developed concept, or to improve on an existing business model.

Grand Prize, 2nd Prize, 3rd Prize and People’s Choice Prize winners will be selected in each of the following two categories:

• Best Ideas Category: Innovative ideas and plans to be implemented (by the entrant or by others).
• Best Projects Category: Already existing enterprise which has demonstrated social impact.

Enter Youth Citizen Entrepreneurship Competition with Best Ideas and Projects

Youth Citizen Entrepreneurship Competition is the joint initiative of Stiftung Entrepreneurship, Goi Peace Foundation and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)  to empower young entrepreneurs and innovators for positive change.

Young people between the ages 15 and 30 from around the world are invited to enter the competition with their best ideas and/or projects. This is an opportunity for the youth to be a part of global community of creative youth entrepreneurs and peers who together are building a harmonious and sustainable society for all.

Winners of the competition will get opportunity to participate in the award ceremony and present their ideas and projects to an international audience. Award ceremony will be held at the Entrepreneural Summit in October 2014 in Berlin.

Categories :

1. Best Ideas – New and original ideas and plans for an enterprise that still needs to be implemented.
2. Best Projects – Existing enterprise that has demonstrated social impact.

Prizes :

1. Grand, Second and Third Prize – in each category [Finalists will be 10 entries receiving most votes - in each of the two categories]
2. People’s Choice Prize for the entry with largest number of votes – in each category

Eligibility Criteria :

• Competitor must be between the age 15-30.
• Youth should have an innovative idea for an enterprise which contributes to the sustainable development of your community, in a field such as – The Environment, Poverty Reduction. Education. Health. Peace Building. Sustainable Energy, Empowerment of Women and Youth, Food Security, Cultural Diversity, the Elderly. OR
• The youth should be operating such enterprise in the form of a business, a non-profit organization, or an informal program.
• Entry must be submitted for one of the categories.
• Submissions can be made by team too but the idea must be submitted by one team member.
• One entrant can submit more than one idea/project.
• Ideas or projects that have won other prizes or competitions are also eligible to enter the competition.
• Entries must be submitted in English and Presentation must also be made in English language.
